The Polon-Alfa DUR-40EX is a specialized, conventional optical smoke detector engineered for installation in hazardous, potentially explosive atmospheres (classified as ATEX zones). It is typically installed on a conventional fire detection line via an appropriate safety barrier or galvanic isolator that limits electrical energy entering the hazardous zone.

The DUR-40EX operates on the light-scattering (Tyndall effect) principle. When fine smoke particles enter the measuring chamber, they scatter infrared light emitted by an internal LED onto a highly sensitive photo-receiver. The detector’s onboard microprocessor analyzes these signals, filtering out temporary dust or air currents to prevent false alarms.

Its robust, static-conductive black housing prevents electrostatic discharge—a crucial requirement for hazardous zones. It fits securely onto standard Polon-Alfa bases (such as the G-40) when installed within intrinsically safe circuits.
